In addition to the obvious aesthetic and smell issues, littering causes all sort of problems. Trash thrown on land can be a pollutant and it attracts wild animals, creating nuisances and sustaining some populations, such as raccoons, at levels that are out of balance with the ecosystem. Trash that washes out to sea or is thrown into the ocean is often both a hazard to marine life and a chemical pollutant.
